After the rigours of the journey back from Australia in January, we decided on a ‘Spring Break’ in Malta, where we hadn’t been before.  It was a chance to relax and soak up some sun, as well as join some of the excursions on offer.

Firstly, a bit of orientation, with some pictures in and around our hotel, the Seashells Resort in Qawra.

The first excursion was to the San Anton Botanical Gardens, where there was also an exhibition of animated models depicting various trades and professions.  The next stops were the Mdina glass factory and a few other ‘craft’ (souvenir) shops.  Finally there was a flying visit to the picturesque village of Siggiewi.

Next, we had a full day’s tour to Gozo, which involved a short ferry crossing.

Another half-day tour was to see the Blue Grotto, and then the prehistoric temple ruins at Hagar Qim, said to be about a thousand years older than Stonehenge.

On Sunday morning, we were taken to the market at Marsaxlokk, and from there we went to the Malta Aviation Museum.

Our final outing was to Malta’s capital, Valetta.  The high light was a visit to the crowded, but magnificent, co-athedral of St. John.  There was more gold in there than in some small countries.  Blessed are the poor, eh?
